CBHM/MTSS Coach
Alex Freeman is a dedicated school psychologist serving as the CBHM Instructional Coach for Boston Public Schools’ Behavioral Health Services (BHS) Department. In this role, which he began in March 2024, Alex oversees the coordination and delivery of professional development for school psychologists and provides one-on-one coaching to support implementation of the Comprehensive Behavioral Health Model (CBHM) across the district. His work is centered around building capacity within schools to integrate CBHM practices with fidelity, promote student well-being, and strengthen multi-tiered systems of support.
Prior to stepping into the CBHM Instructional Coach position, Alex served as a school psychologist in Boston Public Schools beginning in 2015. Over the course of his career, he has led and supported a wide range of initiatives focused on improving school climate, mental health, and student engagement. At the school level, Alex facilitated CBHM and School Wellness Council teams at Haley Pilot School, leading the implementation of practices such as PBIS lesson plans, student leadership electives, buddy classrooms, and reinforcement systems. His efforts contributed to recognition at the BPS Wellness Summit.
Alex played a central role in professional learning efforts within BHS, designing and delivering district-level trainings on topics including de-escalation, data-based decision-making, and universal behavioral screenings with the BIMAS-2. He has presented at the NASP Conference, Tufts University, the BPS-BTU Summer Institute, and multiple community events for families and educators. His leadership extended to the supervision of school psychology practicum students and interns, co-chairing the University Supervision Committee and helping grow the placement program.
In addition to his work in Boston, Alex brings a strong background in nonprofit leadership, previously directing programs focused on mentoring and youth development. He has secured major grant funding, expanded program reach, and facilitated training for hundreds of volunteers. He also began his career in education as a Teach for America special education teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Alex holds an Ed.S. and Master’s in School Psychology from Tufts University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has served in leadership roles within the Massachusetts School Psychologists Association (MSPA).
Alex is known for his collaborative leadership, commitment to equity, and passion for supporting school psychologists in their work to promote mental health and academic success for all students.
